What
is Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)?
Hyperhidrosis,
or excessive sweating is a condition that affects millions of people around
the world. Uncontrolled sweating can occur in various parts of the body
including the face, hands, feet or underarms (axilla). Although high
temperatures or stress can increase perspiration, they don’t cause
hyperhidrosis. Instead, hyperhidrosis may be an inherited trait that stops the
body from properly regulating its temperature or it may be a symptom of other
conditions including anxiety disorders, thyroid malfunction, nerve damage and
menopause. Hyperhidrosis can also occur as a side effect of a medication.
Until now, excessive sweating has been difficult to control. Health Canada has
approved the use of Botox ®Therapeutic for the long lasting treatment of this
disorder that affects such a large part of the population.
How
does Botox ® work?
Botox ®
Therapeutic is a highly purified naturally occurring protein derived from the
Clostriduim Botulinum bacteria. Unlike topical treatments, Botox ®
Therapeutic targets sweating at its source. With several tiny injections given
by Dr. Miller the Botox®Therapeutic is delivered into the specific glands
responsible for the sweating. Botox®Therapeutic blocks the release of a
chemical that signals the perspiration response. Patients treated with Botox®Therapeutic
notice a remarkable improvement in their symptoms. In clinical studies, 95% of
patients with hyperhidrosis that was severe enough to interfere with their
daily lives experienced the benefits of Botox®Therapeutic after just 1 week,
with sweating reduced by an average of 83%.
Is this treatment safe?
Botox®
Therapeutic has been used successfully to treat a range of medical conditions
for more than 10 years. Side effects, if they occur, are temporary. The most
common side effects with Botox®Therapeutic for axillary
hyperhidrosis(excessive sweating) were a perceived increase in sweating in
areas other than the underarms (4.5% of patients), pain at the injection site
(1.7%), or hot flashes (1%).
